The knife is one of the weapons every player spawns with (along with the 9mm, syringe, and welder). It is sometimes used in the early waves to make up enough money to buy better weapons, although it is also a viable side arm for a sufficiently levelled berserker.
Primary fire will cause enough damage un-perked to decapitate a clot, crawler, or stalker on the lower difficulties. On higher difficulties the same is achievable via use of perk bonuses, or by using alt-fire which deals over twice the amount of damage for a little under twice the swing speed.
As with all melee weapons it has the ability to back-stab for double damage, to which the head multiplier is then applied. Additionally, like other melee weapons it can also damage multiple enemies in a single swing.
Strategy
- Time your swings carefully and aim for the head. Weaker specimens can often be decapitated this way.
