Story
Date: 15th September 1942
Location: Central Railway Station
German unit: 76.Inf.Div., LI ArmeeKorps
Soviet Unit: 1/42nd Rifle Regiment, 13th Guards Rifle Regiment
Background: As the Germans moved into the city center, the resistance stiffened. The fighting had raged for 24 hours around the railway station already, with the remnants of the 10th NKVD Rifle Division finally being destroyed holding on to the station, before Rodimtsev’s Guardsmen arrived to shore up the defense.
Situation: 76.Inf.Div. has been engaged in brutal combat around the station for over 24 hours, making the troops exhausted but determined. What they hadn’t realized was that they were now facing the first troops of Rodimtsev’s 13th Guards Rifle Division – probably the best unit in the Red Army. However, Rodimtsev’s men were spread terribly thinly, even though prepared to sell their lives dearly.
Real life end result: 76.Inf.Div. had a further brutal 24 hours, with casualties piling up as the battle for the station see-sawed back and forth. The few Soviet Guardsmen were finally forced to pull back, but only across the square to the building known as the “Nail Factory”. 13th Guards would put up ferocious resistance all the way back through the city center.
Notes: The Station itself was a complete wreck at the end of the battle and was destroyed, being replaced with the modern version. Some of the peripheral buildings are still there today, although the Barmalay Fountain is long gone. This includes the rebuilt museum at the top of Gogolya and the "X-shaped" building, which was actually a medical facility, as well as the fire tower in the distance - although this was destroyed in the battle and not rebuilt until the 1980s.
