Set in one of the many apartment blocks of Stalingrad, the map Apartments presents a Russian infantry division trying to retake one of these blocks from German unit that had previously taken over and fortified the area.
The Russians built this set of apartment blocks in the “Upper Settlement” near the Tractor Factory shortly before the outbreak of war. The area was intended for senior workers from the factory and their families, with many of the facilities important to such a block, including a Russian bath-house and the local Party office. While the apartments were hardly luxurious, the apartment blocks were well-built. They were placed out on open ground, west of the cheaper wooden housing and survived the early bombing far better. This allowed them to be used as a stronghold in the area for whoever had possession of them.
